Alexis Ren Recipe Guide

Okay, so I previously made a post called “Alexis Ren Diet and Fitness Guide” and she was also featured as my inspiring person of the week, which you can find here. I got a lot of positive feedback on those two posts and more requests for Alexis related stuff. One of the most frequent questions was “I read the guide and I saw the grocery list and snack list, but what exactly does she eat for meals?” I included general meals like, salads, soups, and meat free sandwiches, but those are pretty broad meals. So I’m going to give the readers what they want. I will provide 3 breakfast recipes, 2 lunch, and 2 dinner, PLUS 3 of her “cheat meals” (1 breakfast, 1 lunch, and 1 dinner.)

Alright, so there’s no denying Alexis has a fantastic body, and most of us are wondering WHAT DOES SHE EAT TO LOOK LIKE THAT?!?! (and where can I buy it?)

Well, you can buy all of the ingredients you need to make Alexis inspired meals at your local grocery store.

Breakfast:

  • Greek, coconut, or soy yoghurt swirled with almond butter with some strawberries or blueberries on top.
  • Egg white scramble with kale and spinach (season with some salt and pepper) and top with avocado slices
  • A vegan protein shake made with 1 frozen banana, 1 scoop of vegan vanilla protein, and 1 cup almond milk. Optional – add a handful of strawberries, a handful of spinach, or some acai puree/powder.

Alexis also loves fruit, watermelon is her favorite, so if you are in a hurry, grab some fruit!

Can’t go a morning with out coffee? Don’t worry, Alexis LOVES coffee and drinks it everyday.

alexis_ren_alexis_ren_instagram_september_k3NQqpaC.sized

Usually she drinks it with some stevia and almond milk, but when she feels like treating herself she drinks it with cream and sugar.

Lunch:

  • Salad made of mixed greens topped with chopped green beans, red cabbage, toasted peanuts, sprinkled with pepper and lemon juice.
  • Veggie burger patty with tomato, onions, pickles, and two pieces of butter lettuce as the buns.

Alexis doesn’t eat bread so using substitutes for buns like butter lettuce helps to hold her sandwiches together.

Dinner:

  • Chicken and hummus with carrots and celery on the side.
  • Veggie soup made with potatoes or sweet potatoes, veggie stock, carrots, celery, onions, and kidney beans. (Throw the ingredients together and let them simmer for an hour)

Once Alexis eats dinner she does not snack after dinner. She doesn’t eat after 7 because she says it is best for her digestion.

As for cheat meals…

Breakfast would consist of french toast with whip cream, turkey bacon, scrambled eggs, and a ton of coffee! Lunch would be a burrito from Chipotle. I don’t know her exact order, but it is definitely not a beef burrito. For dinner Alexis might have something with with bread since she usually doesn’t eat it. Lastly, for dessert, Alexis likes ice cream (duh, who doesn’t) and cookies. She’s posted snapchats while eating chocolate cookies, and her best friend tweeted about eating cookies dipped in almond butter.

Working out is a big part of Alexis’ bod. She works out a lot and she was a ballerina for years.

She stretches and does yoga which helps elongate and tone muscles.

I hope this was informative and enjoyable for my readers!

Avocado Face Mask

Avocados will work wonders for your body if you eat them along with other healthy foods, but they will also do wonders for your skin.

Screen Shot 2015-08-23 at 8.35.39 PM

Cut open a beautiful avocado, take the meat out and mash it. Add a teaspoon of coconut oil and a little bit of lemon zest.

Screen Shot 2015-08-23 at 8.36.06 PM

Throw the mixture in the fridge for 5 minutes and apply it to your face. This works best for dry skin. Wash it off after 15-30 minutes (you can leave it on for however long you want) but to get the desired effect you need to leave it for 15-30.

Enjoy!

Tropical Green Smoothie Recipe

Green smoothies are a fantastic treat because they are sweet and creamy but also packed with leafy greens! I personally love (green) smoothies and this recipe is my favorite. It has a tropical blend of fruit and the greens I use don’t taste like anything. The fruits I use are: pineapple, peach, strawberries, banana and mango, however the strawberries are optional because they might ruin the pretty green color.

Screen Shot 2015-08-23 at 12.36.13 PM

Pineapples help with digestion and are full of antioxidants so they are great for your skin too! Pineapples are also chalked full of manganese which helps to strengthen bones. Mangoes help to keep your skin clear as well as improve eye health. Mangoes also boost your immune system and your sex drive due to the abundance of vitamin E. Bananas are full of fiber and potassium and prevent cramping, and lastly, peaches are a diuretic and are fantastic for your skin and hair.

The green that I add to this smoothie is… BABY SPINACH! I add TONS of spinach to my smoothies because you can’t taste it at all, and the more the better. As long as you fully blend up the greens with the fruit (so there are no leafy chunks) you won’t even be able to notice it.

For liquid, you can add coconut water (preferably), almond milk, soy milk, or any fresh pressed juice. I am using soy milk today because it is what I have on hand.

Recipe: (Serves 1-2)

This whole smoothie is 320 calories (All of it, the whole thing, both servings) 75 g of carbs, 7 g protein, and 1 g of fat.

1 banana (ripe – should have brown spots on the skin)

1-2 cups of spinach

1 frozen chopped peach

1/2 a frozen chopped mango

1/2 cup frozen chopped pineapple

5-7 frozen strawberries

1/2 – 1 cup liquid (coconut water, almond milk, etc.)

This smoothie is also amazing for kids since it is deliciously sweet and still full of veggies.

Quantity or Quality: The Truth About Calories

There are tons of people who believe that “eating healthy” instantly means weight loss, while there are others who think that you can eat whatever you want, as long as you limit the amount of calories you’re eating. Both of these perceptions are false (ish) I’ll go into detail in a second. But first, let’s get something straight. Weight loss does NOT equal fat loss, and fat loss is the goal. (Severe) calorie restriction can lead to muscle and water weight loss, which is the exact opposite of the goal. By severe I mean anything under 1,500-1,700 net calories for women depending on size, and 1,800-2,000 for men depending on size. Also, a lot of people have the perception that certain foods are “healthy” when they really aren’t. Low fat greek yogurt? Totally clean food right? Wrong! There is tons of preservatives and SO much added sugar. Also dairy is not a weight loss food. That is the reason why regular “healthy eating” is not super effective all the time. Also results from eating well and not restricting come slower, but last longer than calorie restriction.

Okay so what have we determined? Counting calories and eating junk is terrible for you and probably won’t end in a lean body, but a body that needs to binge in order to make up the calorie deficit. Also, your hair can fall out, your skin gets dull, and you won’t look very beautiful when you’re starving. It’s all about quality – as in whole plant foods. Greek yogurt is not a health food, low fat milk, not a health food. Scrambled eggs, again not a health food, and if your “healthy diet plan” says you can eat bacon… you should know that’s not a health food. (I’m looking at you Atkins/Paleo)

So how do I lose weight permanently? NOT by restricting carbs, NOT while restricting fat, Not by restricting protein. You lose weight (fat) permanently by eating whole plant foods until you’re satiated. The only thing you should try to avoid in your diet is dairy, meat, eggs, and added sugar. If you avoid those three things, you can eat until your hearts content. Rice and potatoes are completely okay!  Fruits, veggies, it’s all good!

I’m really sick of seeing women and men counting calories and macros. It’s a short term solution. Good quality food, exercise, tons of water, and sunshine are the only ways to successfully get in shape long term.

“Starving yourself in order to lose weight is like not watering your garden in order to kill the weeds.”

Inspiring Person (of the week) : Alexis Ren

I recently published a post on Alexis Ren (her diet/fitness guide) and everyone seemed to enjoy it, so this week I’m going to share the reasons why she inspires me. The post is linked here.

Screen Shot 2015-08-27 at 11.22.26 PM

Aside from being a fitspo (fitness inspiration) she is also an amazing person. She radiates happiness and sunshine and scrolling through her tumblr or instagram is always an uplifting experience.

One reason why I love Alexis is because she seems so normal. Her favorite foods are breakfast foods like french toast, turkey bacon, and eggs, and she loves to drink coffee! (I relate to that last part!!!) Her nickname is puppy. She’s just like other girls except she’s perfect and lives an amazing beautiful life.

Screen Shot 2015-08-21 at 11.16.56 AM

One of my favorite things about her is that she is always smiling, and oh what a beautiful smile she has. Anyways, being around (or in my case viewing pictures of) happy people just tends to make you happy. Her positive outlook on life makes her enjoyable to follow.

Also, she is ALWAYS at the beach. Since the beach is my absolute favorite place to be (!!!) I love seeing photos of her amazing beach adventures. It inspires me to get out of the house more, to take a trip somewhere, and really just do more than sit around.

Screen Shot 2015-08-21 at 11.15.35 AM

Plus she looks fantastic doing it!

Screen Shot 2015-08-21 at 11.15.10 AM

She is also full of kindness and love towards her followers/supporters and her haters. She handles hateful comments with grace and tries to respond to her fans whenever possible.

Did I mention fitspiration….. 😉

Now, some people recently have been saying she has an eating disorder. Since I do not know her personally, I can neither confirm, nor deny if she does. If she does, that doesn’t make her any less of an amazing person, we all have our issues. However, I highly doubt she does. Just because someone loses some weight doesn’t mean they starved themselves in order to do it. She may have just upped the intensity of her workouts. Also losing weight while traveling is common, and she travels often. Whether her weight loss was an accident, on purpose (but done healthily), or due to an eating disorder is none of our business. No matter her weight she is still an amazing girl!

Here is a link to her soundcloud! She says the music she puts on her soundcloud “soothes her soul”. I personally think the songs are amazing, but don’t take my word for it. Go follow her.

How to Lose Belly Fat

Here are 7 things to do if you’re interested in losing belly fat.

  1. Eat 1 tbs of coconut oil a day

Coconut oil is full of a combination of fatty acids that help your metabolism and have proven to help people lose the dangerous (visceral) fat, which is found around your midsection. When I eat my coconut oil, I mix it with equal parts unsweetened cocoa powder and some stevia. I freeze it, and eat it like a cool chocolate truffle. Cocoa is also great for losing belly fat.

2. Snack on pistachios

Pistachios have proven to reduce belly fat in people who eat them regularly (along with a healthy diet of corse) They are also delicious.

3. Add berries to everything you can

Snack on them, add them to your smoothie, put them in your oat pancake batter (oatmeal+almond Milk+agave+frozen berries), or any other way you can think of. Berries are delicious and chalked full of antioxidants which helps to reduce belly fat.

4. Green Tea

3-5 cups daily! Green tea is great for your metabolism and can help with blood sugar spikes. It’s also delicious. Don’t add sugar though, or you’ll negate the good parts. Add some stevia (never aspartame; splenda, sweet and low) or honey if you really need it.

5. Lemon water for digestion

Drinking some warm lemon water in the morning and at night can help with digestion and keep your belly flat. Bloating after meals is common if you’re eating a lot of fiber (which is good) so drinking some warm lemon water can help to minimize bloating.

6. You’re going to love this one: Avocado!

Guac, sliced avocado, mashed avocado, any way you slice it (or mash it) avocado is delicious! Add it to your veggie (no cheese) burritos, on your rice and beans, on your toast, on your hash browns (seriously, try it.), or on anything else you’d like. Avocado is rich in monounsaturated fats which helps with belly fat.

Screen Shot 2015-08-20 at 9.53.07 AM

7. Drink more water!

Water, water, water. You need to stay hydrated in order for your body to burn fat. Also, the water will help your body flush out the fat once you’ve burned it. It also makes your skin, hair, and nails better. Drink. More. Water!

Also, bonus tip: Get an ab-spiration! I chose Alexis Ren! But just finding a picture of any abs that you like can remind you to keep working hard for your goals just like those girls.

Screen Shot 2015-08-16 at 11.37.38 AM

There is a wonderful picture of some bangin’ abs, feel free to print it out and hang it on your fridge. Also remember, losing belly fat is not about less calories, it’s about good quality calories.

How to go Vegan

First, get your reasons straight. Do you want to do this for ethical reasons? Do you want to quit putting garbage in your body? Do you just want to get skinny/lose weight? Are you doing it for environmental reasons? Hopefully you can answer yes to the first, second and fourth question. If you can only answer yes to the third question (Do you just want to lose weight?) then I suggest you get educated, and get passionate about the other questions. Veganism is a long term thing, not a diet. I repeat, NOT A DIET.  If you aren’t passionate about the other aspects of veganism, aside from a better looking body, you will not last on this lifestyle.

Okay, so once you watch the documentary earthlings or do some research, you’ll realize this lifestyle is the best for the earth, the animals, and you. Keep this in mind through all the ridicule you’ll get.

How to deal with said ridicule: YOU DON’T. If someone makes fun of you, tell them to shut up. It’s not funny. Your moral beliefs aren’t funny and anyone making fun of them is a terrible person… and you should let them know that. A short simple “those are my moral beliefs and you making fun of them is very rude and completely out of line. Please stop.” Will most likely end the conversation and if it doesn’t make it VERY clear that you will not tolerate it.

Anyways, once you’re ready for the transition, (if you can’t go cold turkey) cut out red meat first. Maybe try a week of normal eating, just minus the red meat. Next cut out chicken and turkey. At this point you’re following a pescatarian diet. Next week cut out eggs and fish/seafood. Nothing with eggs baked into it, no scrambled eggs, cut them out COMPLETELY. (Some people just thinks this means no eggs with breakfast but you can still eat cake with egg baked in). Lastly, cut out dairy. (Gelatin goes out with red meat). After about a month you’ll be completely vegan. Sometimes a cold turkey approach leads to huge binges in a couple of weeks, so slowly going off what you are used to can be better.

Step 1: (to normal life except as a vegan) Find restaurants with vegan friendly menus

You’d be surprised by how many fast food places have vegan options! You can google this stuff and find answers. A little tip: most pizza crust/sauce is vegan so cheese-less veggie pizza can actually be a healthy dinner.

Step 2: Get a VEG-SPIRATION

Screen Shot 2015-08-16 at 11.34.50 AM

That is Rene Somerfield, a gorgeous VEGAN model. Just a little snapshot of how glowing veganism can make a person.

Step 3: Get a routine

Eating meat is convenient and a habit for most. Once you get into the habit of eating smoothies, salads, veggie burgers, rice, and potatoes for breakfast lunch and dinner, the other foods stop being tempting, because they stop even being an option.

Step 4: NO MORE EXCUSES

“Oh but I think I need some meat maybe once a week for protein.” Guuuuurrrlllll…. 100 calories of broccoli has double the amount of protein as 100 calories of beef so get over your protein deficiency excuses. We do not need meat, eggs, or dairy to live/be healthy, and if you think vegans don’t get enough protein… maybe you should google the protein content of vegan food (kale, beans, rice, potatoes, squash) and then think about that again. Seriously, I can’t stress that enough. If you say vegans don’t get enough protein in front of an educated vegan they will forever consider you an idiot.

And lastly, if you want this lifestyle to last, don’t restrict calories. Eat your fruits and veggies in abundance. Pasta is not fattening and rice and potatoes can be eaten abundantly also. If you want some coconut/soy/almond/rice milk ice cream, eat some. Veganism is about health and abundance NOT deprivation.
