Workout Playlists

Music is an essential part of working out. If it wasn’t for my three playlists I don’t know if I would work out nearly as much as I do. It’s super important to have a kick ass playlist while running because it’s easier to run for 15-30 minutes when you can lose yourself in a song. My three main work outs are running, weight lifting, and yoga/pilates.

For yoga/pilates my 10 songs are:

  • Do You Go Up – KHAI                                                                         Screen Shot 2015-09-29 at 10.48.06 PM
  • Dafty (feat. Krue) – Oshan
  • Your Soul – Hippie Sabotage
  • Away From Me (Michah Remix) – CHINAH
  • Midnight Sky – PETIT BISCUIT
  • Lose it – Oh Wonder
  • These Eyes – Tora
  • Trick Of The Light – LA MAR
  • Sunset Lover – PETIT BISCUIT
  • Acura Integurl – Frank Ocean

When I go running my 10 song playlist consists of:

  • Never Sleep Alone – Kaskade
  • Boarderline – Vanic X Tove Stryke
  • Be Together (Feat. Wild Belle – Vanic Remix) – Major Lazer
  • Long Time Coming – KAASI
  • How Deep Is Your Love (Chris Lake Remix) – Calvin Harris Screen Shot 2015-09-29 at 10.49.09 PM
  • Aloha (Feat. Marryn Jeann) – Møme
  • Relax With Me – PARTYNEXTDOOR
  • Silverlined – XYconstant
  • Pretty Thoughts – PETIT BISCUIT

When I lift I like to listen to harder music generally with more lyrics, here are my 10:

  • Oh Wonder – Body Gold (Louis the Child Remix)
  • Pain Goes Away – Refs
  • Say My Name (Feat. Zyra) – Odesza
  • Crazy – Art of Sleeping
  • Lovit – Marian Hill
  • Shifted Thoughts (Feat. La Mar)
  • I Tried – Folded Like Fabric
  • You Didn’t Need My Love – Ánders                               Screen Shot 2015-09-29 at 10.56.10 PM
  • Habits Of My Heart – Jaymes Young
  • Attica ’71 – Olivver the Kid

These are just some of the songs I work out to. A lot of these are on the mellow side. When I don’t workout I like rap and hip hop, but when I workout I like songs I can just get lost in. I hope you all check out the songs! Get listening, and get sweating, good luck!

Vegan Milkshake Recipe

Milkshakes are SO delicious, but after educating myself on what’s really in milk shakes; somatic cells (aka puss), protein designed to turn a baby calf into a full crown cow in a few months, and the milk of a cow (I’m sorry but would you drink gorilla milk, pigs milk, etc? No.) I just wouldn’t be able to even consider drinking another milkshake. I’m really glad that I’m finally in that mentality because I stopped thinking about dairy as food, but I also miss the sweet and cold milkshakes I used to enjoy almost everyday for most of my high school life.

But don’t worry, pretty much EVERYTHING non-vegan can be made vegan… “ham”burgers, ribs, ice cream, cake, cookies, even scrambled eggs! (Go out and get a tofu scramble today, it’s life changing) So I set out on my own quest to discover the perfect vegan milkshake recipe, and I was NOT disappointed. Bonus: drink your vegan milkshake with a vegan donut 😉

Both of these recipes are really delicious and pretty healthy. Both are refined sugar free, vegan, and full of nutrients! Also after drinking one of these you’ll feel energized, satisfied, and no guilt unlike after drinking a regular milkshake.

If you try either of these recipes, comment and tell me if you liked it!

Mean and Green

I cannot stress the importance of greens enough! Greens are good, greens are amazing, greens are important! I try to eat/drink at least 2 big handfuls of leafy greens a day and loads more veggies.

Leafy green vegetables play a huge part in muscle growth and fat loss. Here is an article talking about vegetables role in muscle growth. Here is a science based article on the benefits of leafy greens and how they help with lean muscle growth. Lastly, here is an article about the other health benefits of leafy greens.

A super easy way to get your greens in are green smoothies! I LOVE green smoothies, in fact I have one of my personal favorites up on my blog which you can find here. Although I love that recipe my new favorite recipe is a green hemp “milk” shake.

It has kale, hemp milk, frozen banana, coconut meat, and agave. So delicious and a great way to get a handful of kale in that tastes like a treat.

My other favorite way to get my daily serving of greens is a yummy salad. I used to hate salad until I discovered my new favorite salad a couple of months ago. It’s an arugula salad with leek, spring onion, salted pistachios, and tangerine vinaigrette. So good, and super healthy.

You have to find a salad combo that you love and run with it. Even if you don’t switch up which greens you eat, one kind is better than none.

Greens for muscle growth, greens for healthy skin/hair/nails, greens for fat loss, greens for life!

I love juice/smoothie bars that serve acai and quinoa bowls and have a giant superfood topping bar. They are probably one of my favorite things on earth. Usually the vibe/environment is awesome and the food is delicious plus it’s all healthy and filling. Recently I discovered Healeo in Seattle and I’ve fallen in love. Their website is linked here if you’re interested.

I got the acai bowl and the pitaya bowl. The acai bowl was sweeter, but both were delicious. Also, the granola was amazing. I chose to top my bowls with coconut shreds and hemp seeds. I will definitely be ordering both of these again.

Here is a close up of my pitaya bowl for your viewing pleasure.

I also ordered the cranberry smoothie made with kale, cayenne, and apple which was… fantastic to say the least. Also a close up of the pitaya puree. Beautiful color, amazing taste. Go to Healeo today!

A Teen Girls Guide To Perfect Skin

I was blessed with pretty good skin… I don’t have crazy acne or super uneven coloring but I also don’t have that perfect one tone skin or that milk and honey silky smooth complexion. Overall though, I can’t complain. HOWEVER my skin will break out (and I mean break out) if I don’t take care of it. But I’ve discovered the secret to perfect skin and I’m here to share it.

People have told me that my skin glows and I’ve had friends tell me how jealous they are about the fact that my skin never breaks out. I just smile and thank them, instead of telling them that it wasn’t always this way and I used to have dull, break out prone skin.

Tip 1: Water, Lemon Water, and Coconut Water.

Staying hydrated is so important when it comes to keeping your skin clear. Drinking 2-3 L of water a day can work miracles for your skin. In order to clear up your skin you have to keep on flushing your system and the best way to do that is water! Also, AVOID soda, juice from concentrate or with added sugar, and any drinks with preservatives, chemicals, aspartame or added sugar.

Tip 2: Clay Masks

Clay masks are my obsession. On certain weeks I use them every other night, but sometimes I use them once a week. There are also different strengths of clay masks so if you have very sensitive skin you can use the lighter ones. These masks just suck everything out of your face (including moisture, so you have to replenish… I’ll talk more about that in tip 3) and when you wash them off your face is smooth and pure. I like to use the aztec clay masks which are pretty cheap and super effective.

Tip 3: Coconut oil for moisturizer

The best skin care tip I’ve ever received was “put coconut oil on your face, girl I swear to god” Now I can’t live without it. It keeps my skin so moisturized and I can put it on in confidence knowing that there are no added chemicals or weird stuff that I wouldn’t want in or on my body.

Tip 4: Wash your pillow case at least once a week

Pillow cases are covered in dead skin, dirt, and oil and putting your face on it all night, every night… is terrible for breakouts.

Tip 5: Wash your face every night and never sleep with make up on

This should be a no brainer, but sometimes girls do it without noticing and wash their faces in the morning. This is almost the worst thing you can do for your skin, behind tip 6.

Tip 6: Cut dairy and sugar out of your diet

Dairy and sugar, the lethal combination when it comes to breakouts. Diet plays a HUGE role in skin health and the best things you can eat for skin health are fruits and veggies. The worst are diary products and added sugar. Going vegan has done wonders for my skin and when I eat cookies, ice cream, and chips (all vegan of corse) I notice my skin gets a little wilder compared to when I eat a lot of veggies and smoothies. What you put in your body is just as important as what you put on it.

Tip 7: Try to go a day without make up (each week) or use tinted moisturizer over foundation.

Make up clogs the pours and does not allow the skin to breathe, so going a day (or two) with out it can really help clear up your skin. Also, tinted moisturizer is a lot lighter than foundation and allows the skin to breathe more. Find a vegan brand and try it out, it may change your life! Also, if you’re worried about not covering your blemishes up enough with tinted moisturizer remember that the more you take care of your skin, the clearer it will get, and the less make up you’ll need. It’s a process!

Tip 8: Drink teas full of ginger, herbs, and antioxidants

I actually have my own recipe you can try.

Homemade Detox Tea Recipe

Detoxes (juice cleanses, the master cleanse, etc) are pretty much all scams. Your liver will detoxify your body and keep you healthy.  Juice cleanses often lead to binges later and the master cleanse severely restricts the body of calories and nutrients. If you’re really trying to detoxify your body stop putting meat, dairy, and eggs into it. Eating a plant based diet will make your skin brighter, your hair grow faster, your nails stronger, and your body feel better. Any ways, back to this tea recipe. It’s not about “detoxing” like a juice cleanse, it’s just meant to help keep everything moving smoothly.

There are no secret additives like laxatives, it’s just warm water, ginger, a few herbs and optional sweetener. So, if detoxes are a scam, why is this called the detox tea? Well it’s less about getting “toxins” out of your body and just helping you go to the bathroom and stay hydrated. I call it detox tea though because it sounds fancy and it actually does help get unwanted stuff out of your gut unlike cleanses.

The ingredients are…

1 thumb of ginger

1 chamomile tea bag

1 green tea bag

Squeeze of lemon juice

1 tbs agave

2 cups of water

Screen Shot 2015-09-05 at 2.12.29 PM

This tea will NOT “remove toxins” (your liver will do that) or magically make you lose weight (no detox tea does, those are huge scams). But it will help keep everything moving, give you a nice dose of antioxidants, soothe your stomach, help with indigestion, reduce period cramps, and taste fantastic. This tea is perfect because you know every single ingredient going into it so you will know there are no sneaky preservatives or weird ingredients you don’t know about.
